I read an interview with Matt Groening in the paper here in Vancouver recently, and he was asked how he explains the fact that The Simpsons have been around for 20 years. Matt said that the gags which run throughout each episode are fun and keep the audience laughing, but he was quite clear on the true appeal of the show coming from its strong emotional core : stories about a family who through all their trials and tribulations truly love each other and stand by one another.
This episode was just another example of Matt's true vision of the show being told once again. And I agree with Marge : God would never ask a Parent to sacrifice their child for the good of the world...again. : ' )
